The Canonet 28 was made from 1971 to 1976. You'll see it called the "new" Canonet 28, because Canon made a different camera with the same name in the 1960s. It's 40mm f/2.8 lens has five elements in four groups - not as fast or as fine as the QL17 G-III's glass, but still many steps up from most other cameras aimed at the casual.

Canon 28 rangefinder camera review YouTube
The original Canonet is an unconventional camera. It uses a selenium meter - not uncommon in the days when the original Olympus Trip was a big seller. Back in the 1950s quite a few cameras had 'novel' methods of winding film on. The Canonet winder is on the base of the camera, with a fold-down trigger for use with the left hand.

Canon 28 & 40mm 2.8
The Canonet 28 has an indicator on the back of the top-plate to give reassurance that the film is travelling across the gate. In addition the rear door seems to wrap around sufficiently that I wasn't worried at all about the light seals. Film advance is nice and smooth too.

Based on the Canonet 28, this camera was made for Bell & Howell which was Canon's distributor in America at the time. The camera had Bell & Howell's needle-aligning delta rangefinder which employed a triangulation system. The lens was then focused by aligning another needle at the moving needle's position. It was a simple rangefinder system.
